to me personally it's more the idea of us still being a monarchy with royalty and all that comes with it (no matter how ridiculous) it gets sometimes....but.. come on people.. you gotta give them (King) some credit for all they've done so far...it may be hard for you guys abroad to get it sometime but i somehow am proud of tradition and culture and all that.....no matter how much politics overpower all here in Tonga these days....it makes us proud to still hang on to that piece of history

Uso, as much as we love our history, customs and traditions, I surely don't want to be serving a dictator of a master all my life. I'm not implying the king is a dictator, but the noose is awfully tight.

As the reform commission has suggested, there are heaps of ways the king can still be king. e.g. Queen of England comes to mind.

Even the white man here in America saw the ills of slavery, and thousands of lives were lost for that freedom. Equality for all the people, and let them prosper as he or she fits...

well malo 'aupito SURF808 for that insight...gotta say haven't been serving under no dictator of a master no matter how many people stress that out..the commission is
welcome to go ahead with their reform and we are free to serve our king ..we all want equality for all people but not on the cost of integrity and pride

Uso, equality for all Tongans has nothing to do with integrity and pride. These are character traits possessed by any principled Tongan commoner that truly wants reforms for all.

However, it is the smoke screens the king, his nobles and elitists wannabes that are shielding the subjects from that word again "FREEDOM".

well easier day than done when you live a world away from reality (here)it's amazing how integrity and pride can be use as self posses traits to suits ones purpose just as equality for all people can be manipulated to lure minds...but the hardcore truth that goes on in HERE is no walk in the park even for "elitists wannabes" & nobles

So true, so true, much easier said than done!!! But, as you and I both know, Rome was not built in one day back in the days. Hence,“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” Bill Gosby.

As Christy Lane sings:
One day at a time sweet Jesus
That's all I'm asking from you.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday what I have to do.

“If you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be.” John Haywood.

No one can take what the Royal Family has done for the Country but as time keeps ticking, we have to accept changes around us if we want to compete with other countries and look to the future of Tonga.
The late King(God rest his soul) has made some decisions which wasn't the best call, from the millions that was lost by Court Jester to trying to bring old tyres from overseas to burn in the Kingdom. I know he was trying to do his best for our poor country but it should have been discussed by the majority.
For me there are other ways to improve our Economy from improving fishing, tourism to the search for minerals in the sea. Democratic Countries like Australia tends to thrive because as soon as any leader makes a mistake they get replaced, simple as that. They are always in the public eye so one has to try and perform to the best of their ability.
If you guys remember the former Indonesian President Suharto and his family, its nearly close to that but not as bad. If we look at the British Government. King will still be King but the final decision making is by the majority.

You're a good man my friend, just as proud of your customs and traditions as any other islander. At the same time, you feel that reforms are awfully needed and way past due. As you seek solutions, you may feel you're the lone voice in the wild.

But much to your surprise, there are hundreds if not thousands of well qualified Tongans (in/on the islands), that feel the same way you do. All they need now is someone courageous enough to lead your side to a peaceful solution.

Some of us have followed the progress of Mele 'Amanaki's fight for women equality. She has been mocked and made fun of in one of these threads. There is quite a number of supporters to include myself that spoke up for her. I'm quite certain she has been heard. This is only a single issue of so many that require guts and determinations.

As outsiders looking in, we can only offer praises for all of you that are fighting for such causes, reforms and will nudge along the way for moral support. I'm not sure if funds are needed, but one thing I'm also sure of is that thousands of Tongan around the globe will be willing to donate.

As a final thought, Winston Churchill once said:

"We will fight them on the beaches, we will fight them in the streets, but we will never surrender."

I sincerely hope your fight will be peaceful though... Best regards

Sorry Uso but that's the last thing we want, blood shed if that's what you mean. May be it was just a figurative speech from your part. We definately don't want what happened during the 16/11 riot. As a lot of people knew it was lead by a lot of deportees from USA, Australia and NZ.
Like you said above, they needed someone to lead and give OPEN SPEECHES in public, because unfortunately a lot of the people in Tonga are not well informed or are not ready for SOMETHING NEW.'Akilisi is the main man in my book. I remember when he first came up with the Democracy Idea, everyone look at him like he had two heads.

LOL... Completely the opposite my friend!!! I was tempted to substitute the words "fight" with "debate", but I'll then misquote the quote... I do not condone nor reinforce violence.

As you may have followed some of my comments to Felemea, numerous times I've stressed a peaceful solution as reflected and as I intentionally ended my last post with just to be sure. God forbid and curse whoever starts another riot in Nukualofa...

Although the quote was stated in times of war, my intention is/was to encourage such leaders as Akilisi, Felemea and followers to "fight" in a peaceful manner, which they are more than qualified and capable of doing.

hahahaha no worries my fren and just to be clear im not looking for a fight either LOL life's too short to live in contempt and the world's too small for haters haha so debate will do jus fine...all is fair in love and war rite but have rest assure i ain't gonna start burning down half the town now especially that they've jus started rebuilding most of it jus so you know but can't say the same for my "followers" thou haha nah m afraid m jus "the lone voice with a mission" and that's to see peace, love and equality for all restore to the kingdom...i know i know it's naive but hey i might get elected to parliament or as Prime Minister than i can really do some serious damage hahahahaha....cheers
