Syria to Let US Screen Iraqi Refugees

“In this respect we do appreciate Syria's decision to renew cooperation with us on our programs to address this humanitarian issue”

Syria has agreed to allow U.S. interviewers into the country to screen Iraqi refugees for admission to the United States, clearing a major obstacle to the Bush administration's resettlement program, the State Department said Thursday.

Suspect site razed by Syria: nuclear study group

“Dismantling and removing the building at such a rapid pace dramatically complicates any (IAEA) inspection of the facilities and suggests Syria may be trying to hide what was there”

By Mark Heinrich

VIENNA (Reuters) - New satellite pictures show Syria has razed the site of what might have been a secret nuclear reactor under construction apparently bombed by Israel last month, an atomic research institute says.

Syria has denied illicitly hiding a nuclear site from the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and said the only facility in the area in question was a desertification research centre.

In commercial satellite images taken on Wednesday and issued by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a suspected reactor building visible in aerial photos before the September 6 air raid had vanished and the ground underneath scraped clean, the institute said. Read more

Syrian Soap Opera Captivates Arab World

“It's obvious that men are attracted to this series because it reminds them of something they miss, which is an obedient woman, which is what men want”

With its tales of brave men and dutiful women in a simpler, long-vanished Middle East, a Syrian soap opera has become the latest rage in the Arab world during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Throughout the month, people across the Middle East have rushed from mosques and flocked to coffeehouses each evening to catch 'Bab el-Hara,' or 'The Neighborhood Gate.' When the popular leader of the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah gave a televised address last Friday, many of his supporters watched the soap instead. Read more
