Unemployment hits 5% among Singapore residents

Full story: Blowin' In The Wind

Unemployment is creeping up as the economy recovers in Singapore. Jobless numbers tend to lag behind economic recovery, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said a fortnight ago, and overall unemployment is still below 3.5 percent.

The government is exploiting cheap foreign labor and locals are suffering.

Come to Singapore and 1 thing that all visitors notice is how Singaporeans in their 70s, 80s and 90s still have to work and cannot retire like the elderly in other countries.

The present government is squeezing its citizens and it stops only when they kick the bucket.

This is termed as Workfare - when you work even when old, Govt. pays a part into your CPF. Which would you prefer? Workfare or welfare? or toll which the Australian Govt pays you for doing nothing but sun-bathing!

An idle mind is the Devils' workshop, do you not know?

When you work, you flex your limps which is good for older people in a form of exercising, don't you agree.

Come on mate, things are much better where I come from. There is minimum wage so people can save for their old age. Here in Singapore, I notice your government suppressing wages by having cheap foreigners come in to work in almost slave like condition.

We in Australia are therefore able to retire comfortably and enjoy our time with our grand children. In Singapore, the I see many many old folks collecting empty cans and old newspapers to earn a few dollars to buy their meals and most of them sleep in the void decks below your flats. This is a real tragedy.

Having old folks in their 80s working is really barbaric. Many people will agree with me.

Aussie Guy, please don't talk cock and bull story here. I also have a sister and a step brother who migrated to Perth. In fact my mother also migrated there during her twilight years. For your information she was buried in Freemantle Cemetery. They used to fly every now and then to Malaysia and Singapore.

Talking about savings for old age is out of the question because from what I learn from them is "No need to worry" as the Govt. will provide them weekly pocket money until they are not around.

From information gathered, they are having a good time there spending money like there is no tomorrow. If unemployed, don't worry the Govt. will give you pocket money until such time when there is vacancy, you should be working or else your weekly pocket money will be cut off!" Literally speaking, the Australian Government encourage you to do only a few days work a week because it is a very rich country.

Singapore being a small country couldn't afford to upkeep lazy citizens around, so they decided to introduce 'Workfare' meaning that one has to work in order to be entitled to Government's fundings.

As Minister mentor LKY has often said that S'pore being small without natural resources has to build up it's Reserves to compensate what we don't have. It is also one of the reasons why they do not habitually touch those Reserves even to help the poor. From experience, Singaporeans do receive funds from the Government at least twice a year in the form of top-ups into the CPF for childrens' education as according to how many roomed flat you reside. There is a scale of payment which I will not elebrote here.

So, you people, please do not always have second thoughts about our National Reserves as the value of our Singapore Dollars hedge to it among others. I dread the Day that when those National Reserves is unlocked, that will be the day Singapore is losing grip of it's future. Also that shall be the 911 end of the Republic of Singapore. So think and vote wisely, Singaporeans.

It seems you are right. Foreigners are given preference for jobs in Singapore while locals are discriminated against.

Many Singaporeans are now jobless and thousands are earning meagre wages which cannot support their families because of the millions of cheap foreign labour here which have depressed wages.

Many elderly Singaporeans have to collect old newspapers and aluminium cans to get sufficient money for their next meal. They have to do this because employers prefer to hire the abundant cheap foreign labour available here than employ elderly Singaporeans. Just last week a Singaporeans, only 48 years old, wrote in to complain that he couldn't get a job. Why are we bringing in so many cheap foreign labour.

http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC091110-0...

As a consequence, thousands of Singaporeans have lost their homes and now sleep on the streets.

What you reported is hearsay and is subjective. Singaporeans are a choosy lot I dare say because I am also a S'porean. Just flip the Classified Advertisements to quote me wrong. The ones that could not find employment are those that are not qualified for the job or with not much qualifications but want to opt for easy yet high paying salaries. Not only Singapore has this problems but the whole world. The Government is often heard to encourage S'poreans not to be choosy and since they don't listen.
You expect the govt. to resign themselves and offer their positions to those unemployed to convince yourselves that the Govt. is listening.....! Think logic,Man!

The government is flooding the country with foreign labour. That is the only reason. Wake up and stop condemning your fellow Singaporeans.

Are you a stooge of the PAP? Most readers to this thread would think so.

Think what you want. I am neither a PAP stooge nor am I an opposition! Just because you citizens don't want to do low paying jobs or without skills, and expect the Govt to employ you in ' your comfort zones' job - where got meaning. to fill into the gaps, something has to be done! for your information, PRs is not that easy to apply and obtain. There are certain criteria to be eligible. For manual workers, it is the contractors who apply 'work-permits' for their stay and work. Please do not post what is not true.I am only trying my very best to correct your mis conceptions about Govt. procedures. In fact I am a fence-sitter.

Jobless, please don't pay attention to Broken Arrow. He is a member of the ruling party internet brigade. Foreigners are aware that Singapore is a repressive state and now they are aware of PAP stooges trying to suppress the people from voicing their grievances. Here is the link.

Do you all know why my arrow is broken? The reason is plain and simple - it is because I do not go with the Trend, hence, my arrow is broken to the anger of bloggers here. Just imagine, when you post all sort of untruths about the Government, how to expect me to co-operate to cause the downfall of a good and very capable Government. Just compare with leaders in the region to understand the difference! Look front, look left, look on top of front, all are fighting for positions of power and greed. To disestablish a stable Government for no big and grievous reasons, I don't agree.

Well, our voters are highly educated and do not take my words nor your words as "FACE VALUE." Allow them time to evalueate whether to go for tested or untested man in control.

When I talk too much, Mr. John Pontus will brand me with all sorts of names to try and hoodwink you all. So my solution is for you all ungrateful Singaporeans to also do like-wise like Mr. Pontus to call me names that should make you all very happy. For all the money in the world, I wouldn't exchange my support just because Chinaman come to look for a plate of rice on jobs that Singaporeans think is too low for their PRIDE personality to take. May I question you if Singaporeans do not want to gain employment and is replaced by foreigners that are able and willing to do, morally wrong? My conclusion is you people are too free to complain about chinaman and your millions of Sing Dollars salaried to Cabinet Ministers without thinking of the stability of your country.

It doesn't matter anymore. Thousands of Singaporeans are leaving this island every month and never coming home. This island will be filled with chinamen soon. Best of luck.
