"Photo opt" Governor - VOICES / Puerto Rico Daily Sun - 05/11/09

What has Governor Fortuño accomplished since becoming governor almost a year ago?" Right after taking office in January 2009, he had an excellent photo opt by announcing that almost fifty percent of our buses are out of service in the repair shop. We loved him for spotting this problem. However, he never came up with a solution. Most of the buses are still out of service and bus service is worse now then when he took office. What has he done about providing better bus service? Is it more urgent for him to serve corporate interests rather than the people depended on good bus service? More recently, he discovered that the Capeco blast gave him a chance for reaping some different kinds of photo opts. He is photographed driving a work vehicle at the site of the fire though he usually drives around in a chaufferued, luxury car. Boy! Did this shot driving the work vehicle proved that Fortuño is a hands-on governor at the scene of a major tragedy! He usually likes a photo opt showing him with a shovel in his hand at a new construction site. This work vehicle is better than a shovel for a photo opt! In all his press conferences at the Capeco scene, he is with his government's officials and not with the firemen and other workers who were actually putting out the fire. He must have thought about this lack of firemen and other workers in his press conferences' photo opts. Finally, he ran an expensive full-page ad at taxpayers' expense to provide one more photo opt to correct his ignoring the firemen. In this ad, he is photographed shaking the hand of one lone fireman. Is this a true fireman or a model? Any good public relations advisor would have suggested that Fortuño show a larger photo with him surrounded by several firemen and other workers, who worked on controlling the fire, hugging him. Why one lone fireman and such a tiny photo? We wonder if a lot of these firemen -- the true heroes -- would have participated in a group photo opt with him. The media said that some of these firemen and workers, who put in twelve hours a day fighting the fire, had received their layoff notices from the Fortuño Administration. The use of the federal stimulus funds is Fortuño's latest opportunity for photo opts. Republican Fortuño should thank the Democrats in the U.S. Congress for these stimulus funds that are helping Puerto Rico and making him [Continue in Extended Entry section.]

look good in photo opts. He is shown inspecting projects using the federal stimulus funds. His Republican Party in the U.S. Congress voted by large Republican majorities in both houses of the U.S. Congress against the stimulus funds. Fortuño's Republican friends wanted instead of stimulus funds that large tax cuts be given to those making over $250,000 a year and be allowed to trickle down to the middle class. Fortuño's Party of "No" is still vilifying Obama for his stimulus funds. These Democrat-sponsored stimulus funds are making Fortuño look effective in correcting Puerto Rico's economy. He now has a rich mine of photo opts showing him using the Democrat stimulus funds.

What will be the next Democrat-sponsored program from the U.S. Congress and the White House that will be mined by our "Photo Opt" Governor? It should be obvious that his own Party of "No" offers no photo opts.

In addition to being a "Photo Op" governor, he would be called a "Trickle Down" governor if his political cohorts, the "No" Republicans, still controlled the U.S. Congress and the White House.

The Democrats stopped tax cuts for the very rich and did programs for the people, of the people and by the people -- not the special interests.

Obama Democrats do not believe in "Trickle Down" economics! What irony! These national Democrat programs are now making Republican "Trickle Down" Fortuño look good in Puerto Rico!

I hate to say it...but it needs to be said. Our Island will always be the way it is. Unless, Puerto Ricans understand the need for property and school taxes. We can only count on ourselves and our own money to fix our problems . And as a bastadized child of the USA ,WE WILL ALWAYS BE TREATED AS SUCH,we have no one but ourselves to turn to. Proper taxation would fix our financial woes thoughout our enchanted.island, buses, firefighters, teachers, our roads and intrastructure. Fortuno needs our support as we all need his to fix the problems, not add to them. Deal with it.

Sila is an extremely elegant woman. I run into her a lot, for we coincide in the same bistrot (in Suchville).

The only time I ran into the Fortuño's was at the Ritz, a couple of months before last elections. And believe me, they are a very attractive couple. They blended in, perfectly, with the hotel's elegant atmosphere.

Well, I've been trying to get CRIM to appraise a house I built in Puerto Rico for 3 years! Puerto Rico can't even collect taxes from those who WANT to pay them. Puerto Rico can't figure out how much is owed. Puerto Rico can't 'deal with it.'
NOT REALLY

The "white mask" is natural. No peeling will take it off.

Two late thoughts. It seems to me that AAV arranged for far more photo-ops that Fortuño. AAV had one in the newspapers almost every day. I'm not keeping score, but it feels like less than half that for the current governor.

And, AMEN to Bobby B's first comment above.

I know. Just as soon as the Statute of Limitations had run for her. A husband can't testify against his wife without her permission (spousal privilege.)

Jorge,
Im accustomed according to property tax issues, that each year, the tax appraiser apprases the property. Most of the time the amount of tax is the same each year. But never, never did I ever have to wait 2 years for the govt to do anything. I remember the days of Puerto Rico in 1994 when the telephone co. was part of the Puerto Rican govt, and you had to wait 3 months for a phone. In the USA, you wait just 3 days. Thank God that cell phone companies came around 1996(more or less) to Puerto Rico to offer a phone the very SAME DAY!!

So, if Puerto Rico becomes a state of the USA, "...you..." will have a tax appraiser each year (and not "have to wait 2 years for the govt. to do anything"); according to your posting.

Do you think that this sort of situation will improve if Puerto Rico becomes an independent nation?

PRTC will install a phone much faster now. When it became a private company and was no longer owned and staffed as another government bureaucracy, it got more organized.

Yet nothing like here in the states I regret to say. Go to a mobile phone company in PR and the service will be nothing like the service in the states. I have purchased services and equipment from exactly the same company and noticed a great difference from company owned offices in the two locations. Actually, I had the same experience with 2 different companies in the states and PR--Sprint and ATT.

The same with the cable TV companies. I ordered cable in the states and it was hooked up the next day, even on Sunday once. When I ordered cable in Puerto Rico it took 2 weeks for the installer to show up and then he told me the service wasn't very good in my area and that if he hooked me up he would have to run new cable to my house which would take him a lot of time. He suggested I get satellite TV and internet through the phone company. LOL.

Just one anecdote, I realize. My lawyer in Puerto Rico used to say to me, "Some day we MUST get organized!" And then he would laugh uproariously.
