Puerto Rico's Calle 13 became the latest Latin American export to hit London's music scene...

Photo: Residente and Ileana Cabra in 2008 - Morning Star/u.k. - 16/08/09: Puerto Rico's Calle 13 became the latest Latin American export to hit London's music scene last week and proved that this most international of cities will never fail to turn out legions of any nationality for a concert by their compatriots. Arguably the biggest name in urban Latino music, this hip hop and alternative reggaeton duo was beseiged from the very first note by Puertorriqueños - and Colombians, Brazilians and Cubans - delirious at their first-ever performance in Britain. René Pérez, who calls himself Residente, and Eduardo Cabra Martínez, or Visitante, were joined onstage by their riotous and barely controllable little sister Ileana Cabra for a rapid set of the biggest hits from their short, but spectacularly insurrectionary, career. Infiltrating biting, accusatory lyrics into traditional Latin cumbia and samba sounds, Calle 13 succeeded in storming the Forum in their own frenetic, energetic style. [Open link for full story.]

Calle 13 seems to sell a lot of music by being unAmerican. England is fortunate that Calle 13 does not reside in the United Kingdom.

If the United States is so bad, why do they risk their lives to come to the United States as illegal aliens? It sounds a little like biting the hand that feeds you...

i dont understand your comment. they were born in PR, so how did they "risk their lives to come to the United States as illegal aliens?"
lots of american music groups criticize america. i cant understand what theyre saying, but i dont imagine it's any more critical of the usa than a lot of other popular music that comes out of the usa. besides artists are allowed a lot of license in how they express themselves.(did you know that angry american rap/hiphop is really popular in arab countries? and some of those lyrics go way beyond what's acceptible there-or most anywhere.)
it sounds like this is one incredibly smart, talented family. they've won a lot of awards so i guess they make a ton of money. i'd have to assume that 'no hand is feeding them' but their own.

Despite never having released a song in Britain, the duo are renowned among the more recent Latin American migrants to arrive in the capital for their tough street sounds and uncompromising stand in favour of some of the most marginalised people in the western hemisphere.

The indigenous, Afro-Colombians, immigrants in the US, victims of police brutality and the quixotic fighters for Puerto Rican independence are all celebrated in their songs.

In Querido FBI (Dear FBI), Pérez tears into US police agents for recently assassinating Filberto Ojeda Ríos, the leader of the Los Macheteros group opposed to Puerto Rico's colonial status under US rule.

As Pérez says, "In Puerto Rico, we don't know what we are. We don't vote for a president, but Obama is our president."

Songs for immigrants, Pa'l Norte (To the North) and a tribute to their Caribbean island's largest favela, or shanty town, La Perla (The Pearl), were delivered with the duo's inimical mix of Puerto Rican slang and American English.

And the chaotically excited reception that the finale - a scorching version of their Atrévete-te-te (Dare to do it) reggaeton anthem - received will surely result in Calle 13's swift return to London.

i did my research- i read the original article 2x, i listened to a couple of their songs on youtube, and i read about the group on wiki.
from what i read:
theyre americans, not illegal aliens.
no hand has to feed them; they must make lots of money. dad's a lawyer, mom's an artist.
american street music is oft critical of the usa, so why sd they be any different? music lyrics are often extreme. it's art. they want to make a statement in 3-4 minutes. again, i dont know what they are saying, but i bet most british dont either.
