BEIRUT - Fighters of the Shiite Hezbollah movement launched a new offensive Sunday in the Chouf Mountains southeast of Beirut, driving out pro-government Druze supporters from a key stronghold and further expanding their territorial control in Lebanon. Hezbollah gunmen overran the political party offices of Druze leader Walid Jumblatt in the strategic mountain town of Aley and several surrounding villages, then handed them over to the Lebanese army - a pattern witnessed over the previous two days in West Beirut after fierce fighting between Sunni supporters of the U.S.-backed government and the Iranian- and Syrian-allied opposition. The capital was calm Saturday after an agreement by Hezbollah to withdraw appeared to offer the beginnings of a solution to the crisis that erupted last week. But gunmen from groups allied to Hezbollah remained on the streets, and a conflict that has spread alarm across the region appeared only to be widening. Read more

Startup shows off electric car planned for Israel
Israelis got a first demonstration Sunday of the electric car that developers hope will revolutionize transportation in the country and serve as a pilot for the rest of the world.
The silver car doing circles in a Tel Aviv parking lot looked like a regular sedan _ except it had no exhaust pipe and there was an electric socket where the mouth of the gas tank should have been.
The Silicon Valley startup Project Better Place hopes the fully electric prototype will be on Israel's streets in large numbers beginning at the end of 2010. Read more
