A court in Athens, Greece, on Tuesday found a member of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party guilty of inciting racist violence, the To Vima Greek newspaper reported. Plomaritis was accused of making racist comments in a documentary by director Konstantinos Georgousis, where he referred to migrants as "sub humans" and "taints".

Migrant group: 500 feared dead after boat rammed

About 500 Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese are feared to have died after their boat was rammed and sank off the Malta coast last week, the International Organization for Migration said Monday. The group of migrant workers was undertaking a perilous journey from the Egyptian port of Damietta, seeking a better life in Europe, when their boat was overtaken by human traffickers equipped with two vessels on Wednesday, said organization spokeswoman Christiane Berthiaume.

Writer Christos Chomenidis resigns from NERIT, citing 'direct government intervention'

Christos Chomenidis resigned from the supervisory board of NERIT on Monday, citing "direct government intervention" in the state broadcaster's decision not to air live a speech by opposition leader Alexis Tsipras at the Thessaloniki International Fair on Saturday. In a letter addressed to the president of the Board of Supervisors, Theodoros Fortsakis, Chomenidis, a novelist and lawyer, questioned the independence of the board and suggested that it is being undermined by "decisions taken elsewhere, by others."

Female stone statues revealed in ancient Greek tomb

Archaeologists have uncovered the expertly crafted robes of two female stone statues standing guard at the entrance of a huge Macedonian tomb, dating back to the era of Alexander the Great,under excavation in Greece. Excavators got their first glimpse of the wavy-haired statues known as caryatids last weekend, when the stone heads and torsos were unearthed at the ancient burial complex known as Kasta Hill in Amphipolis, 65 miles east of Thessaloniki.

Alpha Bank launches voluntary dismissal program

Greece's fourth-largest lender, Alpha Bank on Monday announced that it is launching a voluntary dismissal program as part of cost-cutting efforts, the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency said. Tsipras pledges major debt haircut and hikes in wages and pensions

SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras pledged on Saturday that his party would pursue a major public debt writeoff, abolish the single property tax and raise the tax-free threshold as well as the minimum wage if it comes to power.
