The seizure of this ranch marks the beginning of the end of true democracy in Bolivia. Morales' own comments that he now has a mandate to aggressively press ahead with his reforms indicates his ultimate unwillingness to observe the laws of the land. It's not an issue of caring for the needs of the less fortunate; it's an issue of power and control. The example of Venezuela and Hugo Chavez, with whom Morales has a frighteningly close relationship, is now being forced upon the Bolivian people. Bolivia is now just a few years away from a dictatorship.

We call people like Evo and Chavez, "populistas".
They get their power from saying that they are
for the "masses". The masses are the majority so as long as you keep telling them what they want to hear .....
Evo did just that (even if they are lies) and the opposition was to busy attacking Evo instead of telling the masses what their party will do to improve their lives.
Of course Evo had to win. Evo (as illiterate as he is) is getting good advise and the opposition is clueless.

Bolivia is closer than a few years away from a dictatorship. Five days after re-election, the dictatorship has begun. The assault on any and all voices of opposition will, from now on, be unrelenting. Democracy is dead in Bolivia.

True. They have ABSOLUTE control now and Bolivia will be a police state like Cuba and Venezuela. If you are against the MAS party all eyes will be on you and heaven knows what will happen to you and yours.
I am still amazed at the stupidity of those Bolivians who did nothing to prevent this and at the ignorance of many individuals in the international community who supported this DEMOCRACY.

There are several parts in the National Anthem of Bolivia that are now very inappropriate for a people that would install the type of government and president that is ruling: like the parts that talk about “libertad”!

Nice try, A.C. to go all the way to the last verses, of the second part of the Anthem, very seldom sung, and truly not much talked about, until y'allz brought it up... and Prez-tow! y'er right: how would a liberty-humming, merryly-enjoying newly conquered glories-kinda peepless, even know where to look for such a change? The bottom line, is it happend'n now even those verses are becoming eerily relevant, but most especially with this thread. RTFS.

Hmm, I’ve heard the anthem sung about a thousand times and the verses to which I referred were the ones they sing. Also, you yourself seem to be no fan of liberty.

The seizure of the Marinkovic ranch is a TRIUMPH for the INDIGENOUS peoples of Bolivia who have seen millions of their land STOLEN throughout the years. That land belongs to the INDIGENOUS people, mariniikovic has enough land on his own, WHY DOES HE THINK HE HAS TO OWN THE WHOLE SANTA CRUZ DEPARTMENT? Does he want to become the NEXT KING OF SANTA CRUZ? AND HAVE ALL INDIANS WORK AS PEONS IN HIS LAND.

I sure heck would want a piece of Bolivian land, I just need to talk to some Camba politician in exchange for political support.

marinkivic is a thief, where as I say, STOLEN INDIAN LAND must be given back, and WE NEED TO KEEP the real criminals off the streets. Amen, Who in the hell wants to own land, bigger that the whole metropolitan city of a country? Where indians used to live, now they get a chance to live in their own land. LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE.
mARINKOVIC NEEDS TO BE IN JAIL. GIVE HIM 100 YEARS SO THAT HE DOES NOT DO IT AGAIN.

The process must go forth, & y'allz will discover the reason behind such obscene land holdings: see, injun's still are on the land (if we can call that a'livin'...)Marinko(bleep),and the rest of them, in retribution for their shady deals, acceded to substantial amounts of capital, from the military government of the time, in order to fence the darn immensities, a monumental enterprise they only got to complete around water sources, and other points of interest, in order to limit and control injun population, who deserve to recover it all, fence money included.

Francis, are you willing to give VA back to the Cherokee and other tribes that were there before you? Say what you will, but the land you live on and enjoy and benefit from was stolen from Indigenous people.“But you would never do that,” Right. Much of the indigenous people in Bolivia don’t really want the land. They want someone to take care of them. They want a welfare State with tio Evo providing for them. And that is exactly what Evo has promised them. He is creating a class of dependants in order to assure his being in power. Much like Obama is trying to do in the US. But the problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money. Also, bunta, what’s with the “y'allz” talk? Maybe you talk that way, and then I apologize; but if you are just being cute – give a rest already!

Evo is just implementing the new constitution, which calls for 10K acreage limit

SPV, is the glass half full or half empty. There is always two points of views to a situation. Prior governments have been so ineffective in lifting the economy or addressing indigenous issues, that it may be better to start from a clean slate. Only history will tell which side was correct.

In actuality ALL of the Unites States Should be given back to the Indians.this country was built on Stolen land and black slaves. That makes us all Thieves or SONS OF THIEVES sort of. Of course allegorically speaking there was some common sense in the later part of the century and thus to its credit the U.S. has given the Indians reservation lands. But what I am tryng to say is that at least have the decency of a landowner so that you do not bring yourself the kind of punishment you get. What would people think in America if I Francis Hubbard owned the LAND in the whole city of New York. I would be called a monopolist and the government and people would want to find out how in the world I ended up with so much land. Reasonable questions probably and especially for uncle sam when it comes to tax time. There are those things that are or can be permited or are ALLOWED to occur in small developing countries which people will not ALLOW to occur here in America or in your neighborhood or state. Lets stop being hypocrites.

I understand your point, the part about NYC, but tell that to ranchers in Texas. In Bolivia we are talking about jungle – part of the Bolivian “Green Hell”. The guy developed it and started a business that grew into the top soy bean producing farm in the country. Nevertheless, the point I am making is that he was attacked because he is a political opponent of Evo all mighty. What would you say if right after being elected, Obama would order the FBI to find a way to destroy John McCain and all others that ran against him? That is criminal, and is exactly what Evo is doing. Also, about giving the US back – Civilizations evolve and people move on. I am indigenous and I understand that.

Marinkovic and Manfred are the showcases of how corruption in Bolivia or ther third world country does indeed PAY. It seems Somehow public service can get you nice mansions, and land twice the size of an entire metropolitan area in south america, smells like the saying HONESTY DOES NOT BUILD CASTLES..... Manfred and Marinkovic know it too well.

The issue of stolen lands...lets see. I will LET HISTORY RESP0ND YOUR QUESTIONS, YOU NEED TO READ HISTORY, FROM PREHISTORY, TO EARLY COLONIAL AMERICAN HISTORY TO THE HISTORY OF THE MODERN UNITED STATES AND REACH YOUR OWN CONCLUSION. THOU I WARN YOU THAT...
HISTORY IS OFTEN WRITEN FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE VICTORS SO YOU WILL MOST CERTAINLY NOT GET AN ACCURATE PICTURE....THEN THE VIEW POINT YOU HAVE ON THE ISSUE OF STOLEN INDIAN LAND WILL ALSO DEPEND ON YOUR CULTURE AND THIS IN TURN HAS SHAPED THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THE WORLD.
THE STEALING OF LAND SIMPLY IMPLIES....THE FORCEFUL OVERTAKE OF INHABITED LANDS BY OTHER INHABITANTS WHO WANT THE LAND. PEOPLE LIKE EVO ARE JUST THE PLAYERS OF HISTORY....EVO IS NO ROBIN HOOD, YOU NEED TO NEED A CAREFUL HISTORICAL ANALYSIS TO SEE ANALYZE THE HISTORICAL CHARACTER AND THEN TRY TO INFER WHAT HE IS AND IS NOT DOING...
