U.S. to pay for one million homes in Angola

Full story: Frost Illustrated

Angola, Africa's top oilexporting country, plans to build about one million homes for its poor people in the next five years with financial support from U.S. U.S. ambassador to Angola Dan Mozena was quoted as saying that the U.S. will loan the southern African country $400 million for the construction of the one million homes.

The title of the story is misleading. The United States never agreed to build 1 million homes. They agreed on a loan for 400 million dollars. The homes will cost 50 billion dollars. Their contribution to this effort is very small to say the least.

After so much destruction that the US wreaked on Angola they should have at least given the 400 million dollars, instead of a loan.

It is very shameful indeed.

The destruction was driven by Cuba, the Soviets and the four political 'war lord' factions. Although the US intervened in a minor way much of the lengthy civil war was driven either internally or from elsewhere. You will be interested to know that the contribution made by the US was to broker the peace. This, by the way is not second hand information. Why not come to Angola and lend a hand fixing things?

You are a liar. The US government played a significant role in the destruction of Angola. See John Stockwell's "in search of enemies" for validation.

For many years the US congress along with various American administrations voted funds for the war in that country. To say that the US played a small role only in brokering the peace is dishonest at best.

cicely, thats true, the US government was supporting the UNITA "rebel" group and there is a video of the UNITA president at the white house before the Angolan president was ever recieved at the white house. Probably it was done that way because of the cold war "soviets and Cubans helped the MPLA and the US + South Africa apartheid government helped the UNITA" but the truths is that all was paid for buy the diamonds, oil and gold taken from Angola, and they are the ones talking about blood diamonds. JUST CAN'T FIGURE...!

Much of it was paid for by US tax dollars. Yes, the Cubans and the Soviets did their share of destruction, but it was standard insurgent policy by our operatives in the region that instructed UNITA in helping in destroying the very infrastructure of that country. That we funded the war for over 20 years should not be mitigated by the use of oil and diamonds to continue to its calamitous end. We are just as guilty as any other.
The US should forgive that loan. The cost in lives alone is without a price.
We cannot bring those lives back from the dead, but at least we can see to it that their survivors are better served than they were.

you would think that africa would be totally through dealing with the us... seems like they should rather live in whatever they got now before taking a loan or hand out from the west. seems like they would have learned their lessons by now.

i guess not.

Africa, much like Latin America, has little self-induced progress. The progress comes from developed nations from Europe, Asia and North America. As soon as an African (or Latin American) gets a taste of the developed nations, they rarely want to return home to "help", but rather live the good life in some other country. Beyond infrastructure, there are lack of regulations, and a myriad of en-grained cultural barriers suppressing growth in 2nd/3rd world nations.

I've spent the past 30 years living in in dozens of countries. The projects of many nations are stagnated by crime, lack of policing, lack of resource and revenues, lack of domestic re-investment, and the exodus of intelligence to more developed nations.

I'm an Angolan, but I left My country 20 years ago all because of the civil war,I was 16 year old at the time. My concern is why is that all the countries specially those like U.S. can't live Angola a lone? they helped to distroy the country with the double stardands,Now they should be ashamed.

exactly. african NEVER needed european or asian assistance for advancement. europeans have been a thorn in the butts of africa from the beginning. why do white people think every black in africa wants to come here? that is not true!! there are many africans that have plenty where they reside in the motherland, are extremely happy and would never leave.

they can't leave africa alone because they need africas precious minerals to sustain themselves; not to mention an inherent inclination and nature to bleed and destroy that which is black and black occupied. this shit is almost over; i can't wait. the beginning of the total end will come with the total abandonment of the american dollar world wide..

400 million means 400 dollars per home. Is this enough to build a home? And why loan, not a grant! Because USA earned a lot from this country by selling arms, and contributed to destroy this country in past 20 years.

I believe its a good thing that united states,at least show some interest on Angola. After all Angola live in the arms of Russia, china and Cuba for so long.

Although united states have nothing much to offer because this economic catastrophe destroyed their financian capability, they at least make a small competition to China.

China build highway very fast but with what quality? They build building with hazardous material. Americans can bring better quality even if it cost lot more.

This will force the Chinese to work harder.Brazil and Portugal also think Angola is their private picnic.Angola need to diversify his friends to get something different from all of them.

Its time for some competition.

Remember, you sided with the Russians and Chinese. Get them to give you the money and quit begging the U.S. to save you from your stupid choices.
