@Lance

Possibly. Possibly they're backing off their original charges because the case is in jeopardy (as per paragraph 7 in the article). It sounds like they may not be able to use the statements made by the guys who were promised immunity which may not leave them with much in the way of evidence.

They possibly did this to just buy time to nail that down and know with more certainty the strength of the evidence for prosecution, while at the same time avoiding possible double jeopardy.(paragraph 5).

Applying a weapons law on a guy outside our borders sounds extraordinarily weak. I wonder how bad the prosecution's case really is.

I wonder if they're going to end up with nothing at the end of this case. We'll have to wait & see.

I know Nick. Good guy. Great American. True hero. His bravery is the reason why you ignorant worms can open your big mouths without getting arrested.

How many of you can say you know Nick Slatten?

He was born and raised in Sparta, Tennessee.
He may have been the kid sitting next to you in class, or you may have been a parent watching your own child graduate as Nick walked across that very same stage.

Nick is not a monster.

He has been a friend to many here in Sparta, and to my knowledge an enemy to none. Nick was affected like many of you by the attacks on September 11th. He watched knowing that he was already joining the Army to fight for his country’s safety and freedoms.
He watched and wondered what he would face in the months and the years to come, saddened that an attack against our country had occurred on our own soil.

Nick’s family and friends prayed for his safe return home. With every visit home he made, he visited his loved ones.
It was such a joy for his family and friends to have him back, even if it was just for a moment. And every time it came time to say goodbye to him once more we each knew it could be the last.

He sent letters to reassure us that he was doing okay and thinking of us.
He was thinking of us as he fought for our country, risking his life. And he thought about all of you.

That is the Nick Slatten I know.

But the media would have you believe he is some blood thirsty killer, after all they have to sell another paper, or get you to tune in to their channel for the latest blood drenched story of the hour.

Why is it so easy to hang one of our own American Hero’s out to dry? Here is your answer…

“Iraqis have said they're watching closely to see how the U.S. judicial system handles the five men accused of unleashing an unprovoked attack on civilians with machine guns and grenades.”

Our country is more concerned with keeping foreign relations strong, than defending U.S. citizens that were defending themselves from an attack.

The weapons charge against Nick was just completely bogus. Nick was a sniper, and as such he used a sniper rifle.

“Slatten's attorney, Thomas Connolly, said he could not comment on the court documents but said Slatten has maintained his innocence all along. Slatten was an Army sniper who served two tours in Iraq before joining Blackwater.”

“Prosecutors were aggressive in their charges, using an anti-machine gun law to attach 30-year mandatory prison sentences to the case. And though authorities can't say for sure exactly which guards shot which victims, all five guards are charged with 14 counts of manslaughter.”

Nick was not using a machine gun. How hard can it be to tell the difference between sniper rifle shots and machine gun shots? According to “authorities” it must be pretty hard…YEAH RIGHT.

Obviously the prosecutors didn’t have a case against Nick, because he was innocent.
They did not have the evidence to support their claims, because there never was any evidence to support their clams.

If you’re from Sparta I hope you’re as thankful as I am that the charges against Nick have been dropped. I only hope he can get back to having a normal life.

Nick is a Sparta Native.

He is a son.

He is a brother.

He is our friend.

And He is innocent.

Truth is, no matter how nice a guy someone is, if you weren't there you don't know. When the BTK killer was arrested, everyone said he was a nice guy. He would never do that. He worked for the church. Yet he did. Nice guys do bad things all the time. None of us were there to know of guilt or innocence. So without evidence, I'd suggest a showing of respect not because he's a "nice guy", but because in this country you are innocent until proven guilty. It's always nice to remind people that. The mass seem to forget at times that little fact and convict people in the court of public opinion. Anyone remember Richard Jewell?

That's right bubba we weren't there. Thank God!
I don't think I would take the word of a foreign government either. Lets send you (whomever) over and see if the truth would be told if you were fired upon first or not? They do hate us. Makes me wonder if they are trying to play on our humanitarian weakness...as they see it.

Makes sense what the other person was saying about the type of weapon the boy was using though. Seems like it would be easy to tell the difference in a sniper riffle and a machine gun shell.

Just my thoughts...
