In 2007, a plan to effectively eradicate most of Afghanistan's poppy fields took shape. It involved offering monetary support for farmers who would switch their crops to produce, rewards for poppy-free villages such as schools and roads, a concentrated campaign of aerial poppy spraying, and US military security for the Afghan army's ground-based eradication efforts.

1 Here is an even better story... It is a delusion to think that we as a country as far as the D.E.A. and the military goes to stamp out drug farms, drug factories and drug exports from Afghanistan when they have never been able to do anything about it on our own borders except spin their wheels locking up an endless supply of them and confiscating an endless supply of drugs while the amounts available of farmers, smugglers and dealers just keep growing. They outnumber the police by thousands and thousands. The drug was is a failure but they want to clean up Afghanistan. For that matter they do not even have the capacity to clean up Detroit, Los Angeles or Miami. These anti drug interests that want to clean up Afghanistan need to shut up, pack their bags and go home because if they can't even clean up their own house then this is all a big ruse to spend billions on a drug war on Afghanistan just like the war on drugs here at home was a big ruse to spend billions and the war on drugs south of the border was a big ruse to spend billions. The facts are on the table just have a look. |

1 December 17, 2007 http://tinyurl.com/2gyt94 DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Along a seemingly endless row of identical gray warehouses, a lone guard stands watch over a shuttered storage area with a peeling green and yellow sign: Euro Gulf Trading. Three months ago, when the authorities announced that they had seized a large cache of counterfeit drugs from Euro Gulf’s warehouse deep inside a sprawling free trade zone here, they gave no hint of the raid’s global significance. But an examination of the case reveals its link to a complex supply chain of fake drugs that ran from China through Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the Bahamas, ultimately leading to an Internet pharmacy whose American customers believed they were buying medicine from Canada, according to interviews with regulators and drug company investigators in six countries. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/17/world/middl... ---------- Afghanistan opium at record high 27 August 2007 http://tinyurl.com/2qj5yy The UN says opium production in Afghanistan has soared to record levels, with an increase on last year of more than a third. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime report says the amount of opium produced there has doubled in the last two years. It says Helmand province is now the biggest single drug-producing area in the world, surpassing whole countries such as Colombia. Afghanistan now accounts for more than 93% of the world's opiates. Despite billions of dollars of aid and tens of thousands of international troops, the report says 193,000 hectares of opium poppies are being grown in Afghanistan. 'Insurgency link' "The results are very bad, terrifyingly bad, because cultivation has increased by 17% to an historic level," said Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the Office on Drugs and Crime. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6965115... 1 http://www.livevideo.com/video/embedLink/BCD8... ---------- Halliburton Will Move HQ to Dubai Halliburton Will Shift Headquarters From Houston to Mideast Financial Powerhouse of Dubai /http://tinyurl.com/ysmomy DUBAI, United Arab Emirates Mar 11, 2007 (AP) Oil services giant Halliburton Co. will soon shift its corporate headquarters from Houston to the Mideast financial powerhouse of Dubai, chief executive Dave Lesar announced Sunday. "Halliburton is opening its corporate headquarters in Dubai while maintaining a corporate office in Houston," spokeswoman Cathy Mann said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "The chairman, president and CEO will office from and be based in Dubai to run the company from the UAE." http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory... ---------- Business as usual Bush's strong support of the Dubai ports deal isn't so surprising in light of his family's many financial ties to Arab sheikdoms. By Joe Conason / Feb. 24, 2006 http://tinyurl.com/h9yah The president's shift in tone is as remarkable as his threat to use his first veto in five years to protect the Dubai deal in the face of bipartisan congressional opposition. But Bush's passionate defense of the United Arab Emirates and the ports deal inevitably raises questions -- not only about the due diligence of his administration in this instance but about his and his family's long-standing ties to the Persian Gulf sheikdoms, and specifically to the UAE's rulers. His insinuation that skepticism is equivalent to bigotry cannot deflect such concerns, which first arose in the months after the 9/11 attacks. By now, everyone paying attention to the furor over the Dubai ports deal should be aware of the UAE's mixed record with regard to terror and global security. The Emirates' ruling families formerly maintained close relationships with the Taliban and Osama bin Laden, whose hunting camps in Afghanistan they frequented; two of the 20 hijackers in the 9/11 plot were UAE nationals who used safe houses and banks in Dubai; and the A.Q. Khan nuclear smuggling network also used facilities there to mask its operations. Since 9/11, however, the Emirates have cooperated with U.S. operations against al-Qaida, and their state-owned corporations have eagerly participated in American attempts to improve transportation security. What seems worrisome even to some who might ultimately accept the Dubai ports deal is the "casual attitude" of the Bush administration in vetting the company, as Sen. Carl Levin put it. Considering the history of Bush entanglement with the oil despots of the Gulf, that lax indulgence was bad policy and worse politics. http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2006/02/... |
