I read some on the early kings of England. They were warriors, head generals. They took chances and were definitely targets. Their very presence put those around them in danger. The possibility of honor that could bring them prestige was a major benefit they sought. If you can imagine a Viking warrior, that was the early Angle and Saxon, simply a leader of a very large band of men.
