China Refuses to Open Web for Olympics

Speaking at a news conference as the Olympic flame was being taken to the top of Mt. Everest, Chinese Technology Minister Wan Gang refused to guarantee China will lift the veil of state-run Internet censorship for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. According to Reuters, China will guarantee sites will not be blocked "as much as possible" over the Olympics, but that "unhealthy" sites would be blocked to protect China's youth.

Despite claims to be an open society, China has an extraordinary fear of free information.

Chinese authorities have shut down more than 17,000 Internet cafes since April 2001. The Internet cafes were guilty of allowing Chinese citizens to surf without special blocking software required by the central government. In addition, the Chinese authorities ordered another 28,000 cafes to install special monitoring software, allowing the local police to watch the Internet browsing of customers.

The greatest threat to Beijing is truth.

Seems the Ancient Greeks were pretty tough with their marathons and their sports under Mount Olympus. Sparta and Athens competed. Sparta was the militaristic city and Athens the philosophical one with democracy.

I guess the Chinese could be viewed as the Spartans, although I remember reading that Socrates endured some years under Athenian dictatorship also. I'm just trying to get at the true spirit of the Olympics. Is China breaking this spirit by cutting off the internet? Probably not. But it does seem that the internet, with its equalizing force, should be able to make the competition also equal. Creating communications barriers is like creating trade barriers. It makes us all poorer. And it makes athletics poorer, too.

Indedy,, Refusal to open the web? No, not really, just a refusal to indulge the youth in the same way that that America didn't indulge the youth of its own country in the 50's,,, remember the Elvis ban from T.V. for being too provacative ? ha...

Sure more than just porn is blocked here but then again, China never declared that it would always have free press like we did for nearly 300 years... give it some time eh,, it‘s better than before

America is Athens, then. Very phylosophical democracy, indeed.

We cannot completely boycott China - they own a lot of the debt that has been run up by this administration.

And where would you plan to start changes. Oh China has the solution, get Americans where it hurts the most, their economy. Is it not supposed to be their strong point? Not really, right!

China will not change until we hurt them the same way. The only hope left in this world now, to correct this situation, is India. Get them educated and it will be bigger than China. Even if there are lots of Muslims in that country, this would be a good way to get some of them to see the light by being powerfull by education and not by bullying them into common sense.

India is so powerfull that the Americans fear them because of their numbers and intelligence. The look and dress funny (to us anyways), but they will be the ones laughing soon.:-)))

Grow up, for love's sakes.
Take away all the dividing and you'll be left with peace. Don't impose on others, just respect them.

That doesn't make any sense. The government is run by the Communist Party of China.

Actually, it looks like you are the losers. Especially with losers like you around. BTW, we're more capitalist than you, who are slipping backwards into socialism, which is one reason why we're pulling ahead
