Marriages fall to 110-year low in UK as more couples shun wedlock
The institution of marriage took another knock yesterday when government statisticians reported that the number of weddings in 2006 were the lowest for 110 years.

Why would anyone want to marry now? When the media and public embrace promiscuity? ALso the media is mundaned with sex now all over screens, billboards, as well as children see their parents living with their significant other.
ALso marriage is seen only with trying to manipulate the system! Same sex marriage too! I suspect marriage will be or should I say is a thing of the pass! |

wonder how it is in the US? I see so many single Moms its embarassing.

Ha, ha, ha, ha. Look on the bright side gay marriages will help them comeback. That's what they wanted. When their population start to decrease, just turn to gay sex. That will surely bear a lot of fruits to revive their population. Ha, ha, ha, ha.

People are realizing that there is no reason to get married anyone in this world.
You can raise children outside of marriage (getting child support from the father or mother) and they are raised just as well, if not better in some cases, as children from marriages. There is nothing wrong with promiscuity, dgshiner. The only ones who think there is are people who are jealous that some people can get more than one person interested in a relationship with them by giving them some pussy or dick, or who hate the idea of sex period and done with. It's time to realize that marriage was a MAN-MADE institution that was made to cement family alliances 5,000 years ago or more. Now that those family alliances are not necessary and we are realizing that it takes a COMMUNITY to raise a child..... marriage is looking more and more like what it truly is: a stupid institution that has no benefits (other than tax benefits and they are offered to signifigant others). |
Embarassing....why do you find it embarassing? |

World Marriage Day 2008, to be celebrated on the second Sunday in February, February 10, 2008. World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the head of the family, which is the basic unit of society.
Q: What if nobady came? A: No one did. |

Um, does anyone think marriage is actually a requirement for a fulfilling and loving relationship? My aunt and the father of her children have been together for 31 years and they aren't married. Their kids used to get a real kick out of it when they were young. In children logic they were very proud to point out the fact that their parents could never get divorced.
Marriage is a legal and economic institution, and in religion also the thing that legitimises sex. Honestly, read the religious texts on marriage, look at the laws and try and find a single thing that accrues to marriage that isn't property rights or inheritance rights or rights to have sex without being censured. Nowhere do any of these things say marriage is what you need to have love, although some say it's what you need to have a stable relationship and prevent infidelity (untrue, as the sheer number of very unhappy marriages and cuckolds shows and the existence of happily unmarried couples shows). Most developed countries no longer require marriage before they allow inheritance rights. And it's pretty much only people who fundamentally believe in their religion that think marriage, rather than love and fidelity, legitimises sex. |

A 'nuclear' family (nucleas of mum, dad, 2.3 kids) is only the basic unit of society in a few western european countries and their descendants. From Italy and Greece through to Asia, Oceania and much of South America the basic unit of society encompases many more people and generations than this. And that's without even touching on the areas of Africa and Asia that stil identify with kin and tribe rather than 'family'. And I don't expect I'll ever figure out the intricate complexities of how aboriginal tribes define family - it's hard enough to get my head around what a moiety is, let alone the fact that dialects can have a single word to refer to the oldest female child of your father's youngest sister's firstborn (we call that second cousin but don't differentiate between gender or birth order). And you thought it was strange the Chinese had completely different words for older sister/younger sister. |

Oh, and some aboriginal tribes also include animals and plants in 'family'. The basic unit depends entirely on the society.

Very, very well stated. I agree 110%. Thank you "Aussie" |

The nuclear family has been under attack here by the feminist movement. |
|
|
Marriage here in the U.S. has been ruined because of them (feminists who have programmed too many owmen to believe they are victims of a [mythical] patriarchy) and the media (anyone remember Alexis Carrington?).

Women treat you better when you are not married to them Why get married and be miserable. You get married and they become frigid and use sex as a means to control you. If you are not married to them, they are afraid to pull that crapbecause you might find another warm chick.

Then there are also the false allegations of domestic violence and abuse (not all of the victims are women or children).http://www.batteredmen.com/ |
|
|
But no thanks to feminism, men have become demonized and blamed for all incidents of violence/abuse. Here in nashville,tn, it does not matter who commits the violence or abuse (or if there is/was any at all), the man is the one who gets arrested and put in jail facing a long prison sentence.

These are just a few of the reasons why I do not plan on getting married.
