The best-selling novel incurred the wrath of Filipinos back in 2013, specifically of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino, for describing Manila as a city of "suffocating pollution and horrifying sex trade," and likening it to "the gates of hell." In an open letter, Tolentino wrote that he was disappointed by the "inaccurate" depiction of the Philippines' capital, saying that the novel fails to acknowledge the Filipinos' "good character and compassion towards each other."
