    The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is hoping that new legislation introduced by Senator Debbie Stabenow and Congresswoman Candice Miller will mean additional barriers being built in the Chicago shipping canals to stop the Asian carp from getting into the Great Lakes. The legislation proposed this week gives the Army Corps of Engineers more authority on the matter, and the DNR's Tammy Newcomb says that could mean a new barrier at the Brandon Street Lock and Dam in Chicago: Newcomb says that state officials consider the current system of underwater barriers to stop the Asian carp to be temporary while they wait for the shipping canals to be blocked completely.
