San Miguel County nominated former Democratic County Commissioner Hugh Ley for the position, Lincoln County nominated Republican Jose Varela Lopez, and Valencia and Bernalillo counties nominated Liz Stefanics.

The Las Vegas Optic reports that Philip Romero had retired from his San Miguel County position but still ran afoul of a state prohibition against judges supporting candidates because he continued to fill in temporarily for judges in other counties.

Bernalillo County commissioners announced in a statement that their choice will be forwarded to the governor, who will make a final decision after receiving nominations from five other counties covered by Senate District 39.
