    The Ludowici City Council decided during its Dec. 9 meeting to accept bids from prospective attorneys to provide legal counsel for defendants appearing in city court. Court clerk Cindy McClelland told council members that the city needed to establish an indigent defense system to provide legal counsel for those appearing in court who can't afford to obtain an attorney.

    Shea Smith, owner of South Georgia Probation, has sent notice to two McIntosh County courts and Darien Municipal court that she is terminating her contract to supervise probationers. The 30-day notices, which were sent after closing time Tuesday, said South Georgia Probation would end its services on or before Jan. 15. On Wednesday, the Judicial Council of Georgia referred charges that she violated court rules to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation rather than vote on a motion to revoke her operating license.

The 30-day notices, which were sent after closing time Tuesday, said South Georgia Probation would end its services on or before Jan. 15. However, the Judicial Council of Georgia revoked Smith's license Wednesday morning after neither she nor her lawyer appeared at a hearing to answer charges that her company had violated court rules.

    Two more court orders have been signed to preserve the records of a private probation company whose director is to appear Wednesday before the Judicial Council of Georgia in Atlanta to answer charges of violating court rules. Those orders from McIntosh County Superior Court and State Court judges come on the heels of one issued early Monday by Municipal Court Judge William I. Williams that removes South Georgia Probation Inc. - at least temporarily - from its role as supervising probationers and collecting fees, restitution and fines from them.

    A private probation office falsely told McIntosh County and Darien probationers they were to be arrested for nonpayment of fees, let probationers buy out of community service, collected more in fines than judges imposed and collected dismissal fees on active warrants, a state review shows. After conducting its compliance review of South Georgia Probation, the Administrative Office of the Courts informed its director, Shea Smith, of its findings of violations and gave her 20 days to respond.

    Authorities from several agencies were involved in a high speed pursuit of a vehicle along I-95 South Thursday morning. According to Liberty County Sheriff Sikes, the chase began in South Carolina on I-95 South, briefly got on I-16, jumped back onto I-95 South, passed through Bryan and Liberty counties and ended in McIntosh County on I-95 South at Mile Marker 40. GSP had to use the pit maneuver on the vehicle to stop it.
