    Officials returned to an Orick beach at dawn Wednesday to search for a young man who disappeared in the surf late Tuesday afternoon while attempting to save a dog but the U.S. Coast Guard called off the 17-hour effort around 10:30 a.m. after no sign of him was found. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office reported that the 20-year-old man was from out of the area and traveling with friends when he entered the mouth of Redwood Creek in an attempt to rescue a dog being pulled out to sea around 5:38 p.m. Tuesday.
