    Frederick County has settled two wrongful death lawsuits stemming from suicides of county jail inmates. Defense attorney Daniel Karp and plaintiffs' attorney Peter Grenier said Friday that the civil cases filed last year in U.S. District Court in Baltimore were settled earlier this week.

    At its regular meeting yesterday evening, the Board of Education of Frederick County determined that the student start date for the 2015-2016 school year will be Monday, August 24, with teachers reporting August 18. The BOE built seven "snow days" into the calendar. If all are needed, the last day of school for students will be Monday, June 20, and for teachers Tuesday, June 21. The school year is shortened if fewer than seven snow days are needed.

    A Frederick woman has been fined $100 for leaving her children in a car on a 90-degree day in a supermarket parking lot. Forty-one-year-old Fatimate Diallo pleaded guilty Wednesday in District Court to two misdemeanor counts of leaving children under 8 in an unattended vehicle on July 7. Frederick County States Attorney, Charles Smith, said two older children, ages 9 and 12, were also left in the car.
