Knowlton announced his resignation Tuesday morning after seven years as athletic director at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to replace Hans Mueh, who will retire effective Jan. 31. A West Point graduate who was a decorated colonel in the Army and served a stint at Fort Carson, Knowlton was an associate athletic director for the Black Knights and has served on several national athletic committees, with a focus on hockey - a sport he played collegiately and which all five of his sons also play, including one who attended the University of Denver.
