    One year ago today, a nondenominated forever stamp commemorating politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk was issued in Washington, D.C., with a first-day ceremony at the White House. Harvey Milk was born May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, N.Y., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating from the New York State College for Teachers in 1951.

    The third annual Hewlett-Woodmere Memorial Day Parade since the event was revived in 2013 was akin to a community get together as residents lined Broadway from Irving Place to Piermont Avenue on Monday morning. Organized by the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association and the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, the parade included the high school's marching band, the Hewlett and Woodmere fire departments, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Endowment Fund, Hewlett-Woodmere Little League, Hewlett-Lawrence Soccer Club, Five Towns Community Chest and the New York Equestrian Club.
