    The Decembrists have a song called "June Hymn," a favorite of mine, which contains the line "Heralding the summer's early sway," and no matter how unlikely it might seem I found a small story in last week's Dear Old Courier which also sounded to me like a welcome hint of summer. Hidden miles back inside the many pages, tucked in somewhere near the Vinalhaven news, for pity's sake, was the annual announcement that applications are now being taken for the Sea Goddess pageant at the Lobster Festival.

Paul was a great cook, except for the occasional raccoon or buckshot-riddled sea duck dish.
