    Maine's highest court has upheld the conviction of a Tenants Harbor man sentenced to 45 years in prison for fatally shooting his drug supplier. Prosecutors say Kierstead told them he shot Mills because Mills had hooked him on drugs but then cut him off for not paying a $250 drug debt.

    The Maine Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the 45-year sentence imposed on Andrew Kierstead, the 43-year-old Tenants Harbor man convicted of the 2012 shooting death of his friend. Kierstead, represented by Rockport attorney Steven Peterson, argued the court erred in denying his motion to suppress statements he made to police and others in the hours following the murder because, he contends, those statements were not made voluntarily, due to Kierstead's intoxication and emotional state when he made them.

    The state high court upheld Thursday the conviction of a Tenants Harbor man who was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the shotgun slaying of a friend. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled that then Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm was correct in denying the request by Andrew J. Kierstead to have statements he made to police after the killing suppressed and not presented to the jury.

    A couple from Tenants Harbor was arrested April 28 by Maine drug enforcement agents following an investigation into their suspected importation of synthetic hallucinogenics from China. Edward Thorbjornson, 55, and Stephanie Thorbjornson, 46, have been released on bail and will make initial court appearances June 8, said MDEA Agent James Pease.
