    Syracuse, N.Y. - After hemorrhaging money for two years, Upstate University Hospital stopped the bleeding in 2013 and finished the year with a $1.1 million profit, the hospital's The hospital dug itself out of a financial hole, in part, by doing a better job of collecting payments for patient services and cutting salary expenses by eliminating jobs, said Stuart M. Wright, Upstate's chief financial officer. Upstate returned to profitability last year despite a $3 million reduction in its state subsidy.
