    Operation Evergreen, an effort to provide live, Ohio-grown Christmas trees to troops serving overseas, sent out 105 trees this year. According to Amy Galehouse, of Galehouse Tree Farm, who works on the project with the Ohio Christmas Tree Association, a crew of volunteers packed up the trees and shipped them out Nov. 14. The trees were expected to arrive in Kuwait Nov. 24. Galehouse added the trees would likely be distributed to troops after Thanksgiving.

    Summit County will reap the benefits of a new effort undertaken by the Department of Job and Family Services to shuffle surplus funds with other nearby counties. As a result, Summit County will see $167,000 in excess funds from Geauga, Wayne and Portage counties, Steve Zimmerman, assistant director of administration and finance for the county's DJFS, explained before Summit County Council's Health and Human Services Committee Nov. 17. Zimmerman said at the end of the fiscal year, when the DJFS balances its budget, unspent money received from the state or the federal government goes back where it came from.
