    The red carpet will be rolled out today in downtown Roanoke to celebrate the return of a venerable old friend - the J Class 611 steam locomotive. Built in 1950 in Roanoke by Norfolk & Western Railway - a predecessor of Norfolk Southern Railway - the 611 has spent the past year undergoing restoration work at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. The sole survivor of 14 Class J locomotives built at Norfolk & Western's East End Shops between 1941 and 1950, the locomotive has spent most of its time since retiring in 1959 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation and "Fire Up 611" refurbished the legendary Norfolk and Western Class J #611 at N.C. Transportation Museum, where a send-off celebration was held on May 23. Visitors took photographs and were able to see inside the cab of the restored locomotive at the Bob Julian Roundhouse and photograph the engine on the turntable, among other activities.
