2009 BMW Conservation Award Presented to L. B. and Peggy Adams
2009 BMW Conservation Award Presented to L. B. and Peggy Adams Spartanburg, S.C. - November 24, 2009...BMW Manufacturing Co. and the Palmetto Conservation Foundation have awarded the 2009 BMW Conservation Award to L. B. and Peggy Adams of Greenwood. The award is presented on an annual basis to individuals who have made lifetime contributions to protecting South Carolina's natural, historic and cultural resources. 'By putting their conservation beliefs to practice on their own land, the Adams have led by quiet example, with the result that many other landowners in the Upper Savannah region have donated easements to protect thousands of acres of significant natural areas,' said Max Metcalf, Manager for Community Relations at BMW. 'We at BMW applaud their environmental stewardship which preserves local resources while still allowing for sensible growth.' Interested in learning about conservation easements and land trusts, the Adams went to a meeting in 2000. They walked out having agreed to set up the Upper Savannah Land Trust with the help of Palmetto Conservation Foundation. The Adams have been the only directors and the only staff of the land trust, which covers an eight county area that includes Edgefield, McCormick, Abbeville, Anderson, Laurens, Greenwood, Saluda and Newberry. In nine short years, the USLT has accepted 38 easements that protect 10,482 acres. The Adams have placed more than a thousand acres of their own property in easements, and several board members of USLT have followed suit. When asked what motivates them, Mrs. Adams explained, "It's so obvious - we must sustain nature so that nature can sustain us. Our area acts as the lungs for the state. Without large green spaces that filter our water and air, we will choke on the pollution. Now is the time to do something." BMW Manufacturing Co. and Palmetto Conservation Foundation present the BMW Conservation Award to individuals who have made lifetime contributions to protecting South Carolina's natural, historic and cultural resources. Past recipients of the BMW Conservation Award include: 2008 Anne Rainey of Camden 2007 Murray White of Fort Mill 2006 Tom Kohlsaat of Columbia 2005 Lindsay Pettus of Lancaster 2004 John Drummond of Greenwood 2003 Thomas Wyche of Greenville 2002 Dale and Judy Thiel of Camden 2001 Mary and Edmund Taylor of Columbia 2000 Anne Springs Close of Rock Hill 1999 Eaddy Hayes of Spartanburg 1998 Harry Dalton of Rock Hill BMW Manufacturing Co. is a subsidiary of BMW Group in Munich, Germany and is the global producer of the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and X6 Sports Activity Coupe.
