    A single-vehicle accident on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on Friday took the life of an Oregon man and injured his passenger. A Nevada Highway Patrol report states that Larry Dean Wells, 71, was driving a Hyundai eastbound on Highway 50 near Kahle Drive at about 7:45 a.m. when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.

    Though two human-caused fires are not yet fully contained in Desolation Wilderness, U.S. Forest Service's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will lift fire restrictions on National Forest System lands in the basin beginning Friday. That means allowing campfires again in designated fire rings in some backcountry areas, including Luther Pass, Blackwood Canyon and Watson Lake campgrounds, as well as in the Meiss roadless area, said Lisa Herron, a spokeswoman for the management unit.
