Retailers must now accept old mattresses at no additional cost when dropping off new mattresses at customers' homes. Mattresses are notoriously difficult to recycle, and this recent requirement is part of a series of actions mandated by Senate Bill 254 to make residential mattress recycling easier.

    If you think that the animal control officer hasn't been knocking on your door because he's forgotten about you, check the mail: beginning on Oct. 1, the Ventura County Animal Shelter will be sending out reminders and citations automatically, based on a database of registered dogs in the county. Over the past decade, the VCAS has canvassed city streets, going door-to-door to inquire on the status of any dogs unlicensed in the home.
