1987: Broin Co. buys a shuttered ethanol plant in Scotland. 2001: VeraSun Energy founded. August 2005: Ethanol production capacity in South Dakota is at 458 million gallons a year. June 14, 2006: VeraSun's initial public stock offering raises $419.75 million. Initially priced at $23 a share, they close that day at $30. August 2006: Ethanol production capacity in South Dakota is at 703 million gallons a year. VeraSun reports profits of $19.6 million in its first quarter as a public company. August 2007: Ethanol production capacity in South Dakota is at 935 million gallons a year. February 2007: Broin Cos. gets $80 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the first commercial cellulosic ethanol plant that will turn corn cobs into biofuel.
