  14. Harry HartRead the original story w/Photo

    Thursday Oct 16 | Palladium-Item

Richmond, Ind. - Harry Rogers "Terry" Hart, Jr. of Arbor Trace Senior Living Community, Richmond, left this world on October 12, 2014. Terry, to most of those who knew him and affectionately called "Bean" by close family members, was 97 years young. Terry, the only son of Harry Rogers Hart and Mary (Miller) Hart, was born in the kitchen of his parents' Richmond home on March 15, 1917. His older sister, Emogene (Hart) Evans, and younger sister, Roberta June (Hart, Jefferies) Howell, preceded him in death, as did his first partner, Larry Rodgers. Over the first four decades of his professional hair syling career, Terry lived and worked in Indianapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, England, New York City, and White Plains, NY. He returned to Richmond in 1963 where he owned and operated a series of hair salons, including Leland Hair Design, The Carousel, and Coiffure Boutique. When he officially retired in 2000 at the age of 83, he was honored as the oldest living hair stylist in Indiana. After his retirement, he still maintained a booth at the Leland. During World War II, Terry served with the U.S. Army in England and France. While serving in England, he met then Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth and was later invited by her to tea at St. James Palace in London. After military service, while working in England at Elizabeth Arden's on Bond Street, Terry did the hair of the Queen Mother. For many years, Terry was an active member and volunteer with the Richmond Civic Theater, Whitewater Opera Company, and Richmond Art Club. He loved classical music and was a Richmond Symphony Orchestra patron. A member of St-Paul's Episcopal Church, Terry loved organ music and amazingly talked his way into being allowed to play the organ in off hours at a few world famous churches. Terry was a self-taught pianist, world traveler, decorator, tailor, talented cook, movie aficionado, and pet lover. As a son, brother, partner, uncle, father, and friend, Terry was inevitably approachable, tolerant, generous, dependable, and ready to help in any way he could. He faithfully visited sick family members and friends, running errands for them and entertaining them with his endless, amusing stories. Terry was the cool, fun uncle who all of your friends liked and the loving son who cared for his mother in her declining years. He always saw the glass as half full and channeled his never-ending energy into various pursuits well into his nineties. Terry is survived by his (second) longtime partner of 39 years, Keith Cates of Richmond and their cat, Abigal Louise; his nieces, Patricia J. Jefferies (husband Bill Maloney) of St. Petersburg, FL and Liz (Jefferies) Runyon (Paul) of Richmond; his nephews Robert A. Jefferies, Jr. (Sylvia) of Bloomington, IN and Jerry L. Jefferies of Hamilton, OH; grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Carol Stevens, and his stepchildren, Tammy Holland and Chuck McEldowney. Friends may call 12:00P.M.to 2:00P.M.; Wednesday October 22, 2014 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home 222 North 10th Street Richmond, Indiana.
