Donald was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School and earned three degrees from Penn State University in 1951, 1968 and 1970. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy as a motor machinist's mate first class on amphibious ships in the Philippines and Borneo during the Pacific Theater operations.
