    It's a stunning coincidence, but those who heard Professor Emeritus Barrett Rock's presentation of findings related to the coffins retrieved from an 18th century Negro Burying Ground in Portsmouth could attend the re-interment of nine coffins at that African Burying Ground on May 23. The coffins were discovered during infrastructure improvement work on Chestnut street in Portsmouth in October of 2003. Research revealed that the site was a segregated “Negro Burying Yard” in use from the 1700s through the 19th century, and may have contained the remains of over 200 African-Americans.
