    Peebles Police Department responded to a call about a disturbance on Eighth Avenue in Peebles on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 18. Police found Dr. James "Randy" Franklin, D.D.S., 57, of Peebles in his vehicle on Nixon Avenue with a firearm. According to a source at the Sheriff's Office, he allegedly threatened an individual before police arrived.

    It will be an after Christmas feast for basketball fans in Adams County as the annual McDonald's Classic Holiday Tournament is slated to begin on Dec. 29. The Classic is both a JV and a Varsity tourney and the Varsity will be played at Manchester High School with the JV being contested at Peebles High School. Based on early season performances, the favorites in the Varsity tournament have to be the two teams unbeaten at press time, the North Adams Lady Devils on the girls side and the Peebles Indians on the boys.

The Adams County Lions Clubs held their fourth annual tree lighting ceremony on the Adams County Courthouse lawn to usher in the Christmas season on Saturday, Nov. 29. Adams County Commissioner Paul Worley served as the guest of honor and urged the crowd to count down with him as he lit the tree at approximately 8 p.m. Santa Claus also made an appearance, riding in a fire truck in the parade at the beginning of the ceremony and greeting the crowd from the stage at the end before taking a seat in the sleigh in front of the tree for photos with children. 3 comments

As The People's Defender reported on Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Peebles Fire Department was dispatched at 6:06 p.m. with assistance provided by Manchester, Monroe Twp., Seaman, Wayne Twp., and West Union Fire Departments. At 8:30 p.m. the West Union ladder truck was dispatched to render additional assistance.

    On Monday, Nov. 17 Adams County Board of Elections finalized the official count of the 2014 General Election held on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Unlike the Primary Election held in May, the official count didn't overturn the unofficial results. At the local level, the official results show all but one of the proposed levies passing, as 52.62 percent voted for the Peebles Village current expenses additional levy and 71.04 percent voted for the renewal of the Winchester current expenses levy.

Ohio's popular deer gun season opens the Monday after Thanksgiving, Dec. 1 through Dec. 7. Starting that opening day, Adams County is down to a two deer limit as antlerless permits are no longer valid after Nov. 30. In 2013 hunters bagged 1,343 deer in Adams County during the 7-day deer gun season which was down over 13 percent from the previous season.
