    A complaint from a Measure S opponent triggered the Nevada County Elections Office to send out notices Tuesday to leaders of the "Yes on S" campaign, asking for new, amended campaign finance statements with more information. Don Bessee of Alta Sierra, a "No on S" backer, said he asked the elections office to review the Form 460 campaign finance statements submitted by Citizens for Fair Laws, "Yes on S." Measure S is the revised medical marijuana cultivation ordinance on the Nov. 4 ballot.

    Two Nevada County fire districts blasted a 2013-14 Nevada County Civil Grand Jury report, saying the findings were "incorrect" and that the panel "failed to do the proper investigation." Board members from the Penn Valley Fire Protection and Nevada County Consolidated Fire districts said in their formal responses to the grand jury that they disagreed with almost every finding in the report, entitled "Nevada County Consolidated Fire District - To Be or Not To Be, That is the Question."

"As the election nears, we hear of all kinds of charges and counter-charges claiming misrepresentation of this or that provision of S or the existing 2349 ," said county resident George Rebane in his Rebane's Ruminations blog, which contains multiple recent posts on various aspects of Measure S. After the major issue of whether the Measure S ballot label was prejudicial and should be reprinted was decided last week, vote-by-mail ballots, sample ballots and voter information pamphlets will go out as scheduled starting today.

    Nevada City-based Spiral Internet is poised to secure a $15.2 million grant from the California Public Utilities Commission to build an underground fiberoptic network offering high-speed Internet access in South Nevada County. The grant, which Spiral will match with a required $13 million in private investor financing, will cover the costs of building the high-speed fiberoptic cable network in a 26-square-mile-swath from Colfax north up the Highway 174 corridor, servicing 2,900 households and 300 businesses.
