    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, proposes to deepen the major shipping channels within the harbor from 45 feet to 52 feet to accommodate mega containerships at any tide. The proposed 52-foot depth was released Tuesday in the Charleston District's Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement for the Charleston Harbor deepening project, known as Post 45. The Charleston District recommends dredging the harbor to 52 feet from the Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant up to the new container terminal under construction at the former Navy Base in North Charleston, giving the ports authority a seven-foot draft advantage over its current 45-foot depth.
