    The Kalamazoo City Commission signed off on a resolution Monday night in favor of Michigan's Proposal 1 to support road funding . Commissioners voted 7-0 in favor of the resolution, which urges voters to support the proposal when it heads to the ballot on May 5. Several commissioners said that although they wished state legislators had put more consideration into enacting a roads plan themselves instead of taking the issue to voters, they acknowledged Proposal 1 is the best option available during a time when the state's road infrastructure is in desperate need of funding.

During the 90-minute special meeting, John Lamacchia, a legislative associative on state affairs for the MML, outlined the need for additional funding for Michigan's roads, which he said rank last in the nation in terms of funding at $154 per capita. Proposal 1, a statewide proposal that will ask voters on May 5 to increase the state's sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent, is projected to trigger laws that would generate some $1.25 billion a year in new road funding by 2018.
