The John Muir National Historic Site Expansion Act would authorize the National Park Service to acquire land that is being donated through a trust, which would improve access to the park and provide more for visitors to see and do at the site.

    A fifth suspect was arrested in connection with a high-speed chase that started in the Sacramento area and ended in Martinez on Wednesday, a California Highway Patrol officer said today. Officers arrested Anthony Dewayne Domino, 21, and Anthony James Tyree, 23, both of San Francisco, Sharde Shenay Suwannabart-Smith, 24, and Sean Donyell McCullough II, 23, both of Oakland, and Summer Pavielle Sawyer, 30, of San Mateo, following the early morning chase, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

    A Hercules man was convicted of second-degree murder on Thursday for stabbing his then-girlfriend's stepfather at their Pacheco home in 2011 during a family Thanksgiving gathering that spun out of control, Contra Costa County prosecutors said. A jury convicted Frank Carter of the stabbing death of 46-year-old Richard Stratton at 9:20 p.m. on Nov. 23, 2011, according to the district attorney's office.

    In response to a strike by the United Steelworkers at nine oil refineries nationwide, the Tesoro refinery in Martinez, which processes as much as 166,000 barrels of crude oil per day, has stopped production, and is now operating as a terminal, which will store product and feedstocks that can then be transported to other locations in our West Coast refining system, as needed. The refinery was coming off of some planned maintenance that limited output, and expected to be getting the refinery back up to its maximum output last week.
