    The competition was intense, but the giant smiles genuine Thursday as more than 100 special athletes hit the field for the St. Tammany school district's annual High School Special Olympics Area Track and Field Meet at Fontainebleau High School near Mandeville. After a mid-morning deluge forced the athletes into the gym for a while, they returned to the field to to compete in several events: the 50-meter walk, run or wheel chair race, softball throw, and standing long jump during the event.
