Already closed for failing to meet air quality regulations, the Exide Technologies battery recycling plant in Vernon received eight violations Wednesday for failing to protect against toxic waste spills near where it stores battery acid. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control issued the violations after an inspection of the facility at 2700 S. Indiana Ave. on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 revealed incidents of non-compliance with Exide's hazardous waste permit. Comment?
The California Highway Patrol released more details Tuesday of a weekend operation to shut down illegal street racing on the 105 Freeway in South Los Angeles, saying 18 people were arrested. Those arrested were held for alleged offenses including possessing stolen firearms and stolen vehicles, evading arrest, driving under the influence, possessing narcotics, having outstanding warrants and reckless driving while being unlicensed, the CHP said.
