    Excavation of topsoil and dirt work has started on the 3.32-mile highway improvement project directly south of Riverton on Wyoming 789. "Excavation of topsoil has started, and after topsoil removal is completed, the contractor will begin building slopes for the new five-lane highway that is scheduled for completion this October," said Robert Scheidemantel, Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer in Riverton.

    At least one dozen people, mostly children ranging in age from an infant to two adults are being rushed to SageWest Health Care Hospital in Riverton with apparent carbon monoxide poisoning. The van was stopped by the front entrance to the Wind River Casino after the Sheriff's Office received a report of a an older blue and white Chevrolet van swerving on the road, running off the road and erratic driving just north of Hudson.

    Early this morning, a fire destroyed a single-wide trailer home on the outskirts of Lander, but no one was harmed. The fire was reported at about 4:25 a.m. on the 8600 block of Highway 789 between Lander and Hudson.

    The program at Tuesday's Fremont County Archeological Society's monthly meeting in Hudson featured a presentation from Craig Bromley, Lander Bureau of Land Management archaeologist. Bromley outlined how a chronology designed to supplement Dr. George Frison's 1978 work and descriptions for the Northwestern Plains for the last 11, 000 years has been developed thanks to scientific investigations in Wyoming.

    Last month, Wyoming Game & Fish Lander Region personnel conducted a mule deer survey of the South Wind River Mule Deer herd and more than 6600 individual deer were spotted. "This was the most intensive survey ever conducted for this herd unit and was designed to count all mule deer in the population," the G&F reported in its monthly newsletter.

    The death of a 19-year-old Riverton man from a single-vehicle rollover on the Wind River Indian Reservation has been ruled a homicide. According to Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen, Clay Walters died from "head and neck trauma from a single-vehicle rollover with ejection."

    The Wind River Visitors Council's Tourism Development Asset program has provided $100,379 to Riverton area organizations in the past year, Chamber of Commerce Director Jim Davis told the Riverton City Council Tuesday night. Davis said the WRVC spins off 25 percent of its funding between the five joint powers communities each year, including Riverton, Lander, Dubois, Shoshoni and Hudson for local tourism asset programs.

Walker's retirement will be effective Walker was a frequent guest at the Fremont County Archeological Society meetings in Hudson and completed many excavations in the area, most recently including the mysterious collection of fire pits found at the Sand Draw Landfill south of Riverton.

    The early a.m. fire on Jan. 3 was caused by a faulty ballast for a fluorescent light, Lander Fire Administrator Nick Hudson said. A valuation of the loss of the approximately 50-foot by 75-foot shop has not yet been completed.
