    Honaker, Va. passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, in Avante of Waynesboro. Mrs. Hale was born Aug. 26, 1921 in Nolan, W.Va., a daughter of the late Joseph L. and Era Lucy (Randolph) Alcox. Mrs. Hale was a former member of the Honaker United Methodist Church and was employed with Swords Creek Senior Center for 20 years as a cook. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star of Stone, KY. She loved talking about her family; she was known as "Granny Berta" and she was an amazing cook. "No one left empty-handed when visiting her home." She grew up in Pike County, Ky.; she had a love for the mountains and treated her nieces and nephews as her own children. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hale was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Walter, and Bernard Alcox; three sisters, Ruby Alcox, Deloris Alcox and Delphine Scott and a son-in-law, Ronald K. Smith. Survivors include a son, James Leo Hale and wife, Carolyn, of Ellisville, Miss.; a daughter, Lucy H. Smith of Staunton; a brother, Irvine B. Alcox and wife, Betty, of Garden City, Mich.; a sister, Ramona Harris of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Randy Smith, Stephanie Hale and Al Hale and wife, Kristy; three great-grandchildren, Katlyn Culpepper, Maggie and Sydney Hale; numerous nieces and nephews and special friends, Betsy Price, Harry and Yvonne Rutherford and family and Sara Vines. A prayer service will be at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in Coffman Funeral Home Chapel, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton, by Pastor John Smith. The family will receive friends following the service until 7 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 in the Honaker Funeral Home, 4686 Redbud Hwy in Honaker, VA. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2014 in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum, Richlands, Virginia 24641 . It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Augusta Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939, The Legacy Hospice, 17 Parkway Lane, Fishersville, VA 22939 or to a charity of one's choice.
