    Hazleton City Police and the Office of the Attorney General are investigating the stabbing homicide of a brother of a Luzerne County assistant district attorney. Because of the victim's connection to the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office, Attorney General Kathleen Kane has assigned a deputy attorney general to the case.

Memphis-based International Paper has reached a definitive agreement to sell its Greensboro operation to Wilmington-based packaging firm Atlantic Corp., which plans to maintain and grow the Gate City facility at 3900 Spring Garden St. International Paper plans to also sell its paperboard converting facilities in Hazleton, Pa., and Sturgis, Mich., to Atlantic Corp. for an undisclosed price.

Lou Barletta, R-Hazleton, formally introduced legislation Tuesday to empower governors and local elected officials to control whether the federal government can place unaccompanied minors who have illegally entered the country into their communities. House Resolution 5409, the Unaccompanied Alien Children Transparency Act, would require the federal government to inform states and localities of relocation plans in advance, and would require the federal government to certify to the states that the minors will not pose a health or public safety risk to the community.

    Officials said police were called to an armed robbery at Pence's Variety Store on Alter Street where two men entered the store with a bat and large knife, possibly a machete. Hazleton police said the robbers took money, three packs of Newports, two boxes of cigars, and took off running wearing dark colored clothing, gloves, and bandanas covering their faces.

Lou Barletta, R-11, said Friday he will introduce a bill that will give municipalities and states a say in whether the federal government can house immigrant children in their communities through programs that have brought at least 456 young people to five centers in Pennsylvania and four teenagers to the Hazleton Area School District. As upwards of 60,000 children and teenagers streamed across the southern border this year, the federal government has scrambled for ways to house them while the children await hearings to find out if they can remain in the United States.
