The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Monday morning that NC Highway 12 has been shut down north of Rodanthe because a combination of high tide and strong onshore winds from a Nor'easter moving off the coast has flooded the road.

Joe Hoyt of NOAA was the chief scientist for the expedition that discovered the U-boat 576 and the merchant ship Bluefields in about 700 feet of water off Cape Hatteras.
