    The U.S. Coast Guard says a South Carolina man whose family reported him missing at sea more than two months ago has been rescued off the North Carolina coast. In a statement, Coast Guard officials in Portsmouth said they received word from a German-flagged ship about 1:30 p.m. Thursday indicating they spotted a man and his sailboat approximately 200 miles east of Cape Hatteras.

    The beaches in front of the seven villages along Hatteras Island and along Ocracoke Island are closing to off-road vehicles for the season. Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac says the beaches are closing Wednesday to vehicles through Oct. 31. The areas remain open to pedestrians.

    The Ferry Division of the N.C. Department of Transportation is increasing its ferry runs on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route during spring break and the Easter holiday. The temporary spring schedule will increase the number of daily round-trip runs between Hatteras and Ocracoke from 18 to 26, with half-hour departures for most of the morning and afternoon hours.

    The U.S. Coast Guard says it rescued five people from a sailboat after the boat's mast broke about 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina. A statement from the Coast Guard says watchstanders at a command center in Portsmouth, Virginia, were notified Friday afternoon that the 55-foot catamaran Rain Maker suffered a broken mast in 40 mph winds and 13-foot seas.

Joe Hoyt of NOAA was the chief scientist for the expedition that discovered the U-boat 576 and the merchant ship Bluefields in about 700 feet of water off Cape Hatteras.
