    Two small earthquakes in Weld County last summer likely put Greeley on the U.S. Geological Survey's list of areas at high-risk of seismic activity. The quakes, which were both in the same Weld County location on May 31 and June 23, were likely caused by a nearby wastewater injection well, a method by which oil and gas companies inject wastewater produced by drilling activity deep into the earth's surface to disposed of it.

About 1 a.m., Weld dispatchers issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for a silver 2004 Nissan sedan heading north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 85 at Weld County Road 33, about two miles northeast of Gilcrest, according to a sheriff's office news release.

    Earthquakes linked to injection of wastewater from oil and natural-gas development have increased sharply since 2009 in the central and eastern U.S., including in Colorado, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey. Researchers listed Greeley as one of the 17 zones where oil and gas wastewater injection may have caused induced seismicity, according to the report released Thursday.
