    Carleton Mabee, a historian who won the Pulitzer Prize for his doctoral dissertation, a scrupulous and often-scathing biography of the painter and telegraph inventor Samuel Morse, died Dec. 18 at his home in Gardiner, N.Y. He would have been 100 on Christmas Day. The death was announced by the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he had been a professor emeritus of history.
