    The Silver Memorial Bridge was closed for approximately one hour Tuesday morning after a piece of equipment struck a steel support beam at the overpass on Ohio 7 North in Gallipolis. Chief Deputy Dick Grau of the Gallia County Sheriff's Office reported on Tuesday afternoon that at approximately 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, a semi with an attached "lowboy" trailer was traveling northbound on Ohio 7 North when the track hoe the semi truck was hauling struck the overpass that traverses Ohio 7 and leads to the Silver Bridge.

    The Fourth District Court of Appeals has affirmed the sentence and denied the appeal of a Gallia County woman currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in the Ohio Reformatory for Women. According to an entry filed with the clerk of courts on Monday and signed by Court of Appeals Judge Peter Abele, Mary C. Marcum, 34, of Gallipolis, will continue to serve the remainder of her 10-year prison sentence through the state prison system.

Hosted by the Gallia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the festival is free and will take place Saturday in Gallipolis City Park and First Avenue/State Street from 3-8 p.m. The event will feature numerous activities and attendees will be able to purchase drinks, BBQ samples and sandwiches from the competing cook-off teams, who will begin cooking around 4 a.m. Saturday as all meat must be cooked on site.

    A man arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Service last year after warrants were issued for his arrest in multiple states for check fraud was recently sentenced on charges in Gallia County. Joseph Christopher Hajj, 34, formerly of Thomas, Ga., Nitro, W.Va., and Gallipolis, was sentenced this past week to 17 months in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction after he pleaded guilty to two counts of passing bad checks and one count of theft in three separate cases through the Common Pleas Court of Gallia County.
