    Divide County Commissioners are one step closer to resolving the long-standing problems the county has had with the former U.S. Air Force base west of Fortuna. Wednesday morning the commissioners learned from Dale Cich, the contractor spearheading the county's clean-up effort, that the state Department of Health appears to be in favor of Cich's plan to bulldoze all of the buildings on the former air base except the radar tower, bury the remains in a one-time landfill at the site, then plant grass over everything so the county can eventually sell the property.

    BISMARCK Water test results received today indicate that the tap water in Fortuna, Columbus and Noonan is safe for human consumption and the boil order has been lifted for those communities. Additional testing has been done in Crosby and results are expected Wednesday.

    At a meeting at 3 p.m. this afternoon, the state Department of Health , in agreement with the cities of Fortuna, Noonan and Columbus, and the emergency managers of Divide and Burke counties, lifted the boil water alert for these communities, served by the now repaired Western Area Water Supply Authority line that ruptured March 13. Crosby, however, remains on a boil alert. All water for drinking, dish-washing, tooth-brushing, etc.

    Although the boil order remains in effect, and will be until testing shows that the water is safe, the Western Area Water Supply Authority told the state Department of Health that repairs on the broken water line providing service to Crosby, Noonan, Fortuna and Columbus are progressing. Jaret Wirtz, WAWSA executive director, said piping used to make permanent repairs to the broken water line was being fused Thursday, and will be pulled into place sometime between Friday evening or Saturday morning.
