    State highway officials plan to reopen travel through a stretch of Oregon 224 closed by landslides - just in time for Christmas. Kimberly Dinwiddie, Oregon Department of Transportation spokeswoman, said local traffic will be allowed, starting at 4:30 p.m., on a seven-mile stretch that has been shut down since Nov. 5. Dinwiddie said hazards still loom above the highway between Promontory Park and the Carter Bridge in the aftermath of the destructive 36 Pit Fire , which scorched more than 5,520 acres of heavily forested timberland this fall.

    Division Chief Richard Anderson announced in a press release that the Clackamas River is expected to rise to 26.38 feet on Sunday, Dec. 21, a level predicted to be in the major flood range. Anderson explained that the river is considered in minor flood stage at 20 feet and a major flood stage at 25. Anderson urged residents in the Estacada Rural Fire District to have 72-hour emergency kits prepared and to clear gutters, drains, culverts, ditches, and to remove leaves from flood drains.
